Males have a pale red vest on the chest and upper flanks. Variation is great across the subspecies. (These subspecies are sometimes referred to as Southern Common Redpoll and Southern Hoary Redpoll, but we will use "nominate Common" and "exilipes Hoary" here.)As observed during the redpoll influx of winter 2007-2008, some redpoll flocks contained relatively large numbers of Common Redpolls identified as subspecies rostrata, known as Greater Redpoll, which is larger, darker, and more heavily Acanthis flammea rostrata (Coues, 1861) Iceland Redpoll subspecies Accepted species like Acanthis flammea rostrata NORTHWESTERN REDPOLL Carduelis rostrata – another high Arctic species occurring from eastern Baffin Island to the west and east coasts of Greenland.

Arctic redpoll – Image Source. With the exact extent of interbreeding between hoary redpolls (Acanthis hornemanni, aka Arctic redpoll) and common redpolls remaining unknown up-to-date, it can be quite difficult to separate these birds at a mere glance.Adult male hoary redpolls are white below, while frosty white above, and the blush on the breast is only very pale pink. Gråsiska – Wikipedia

Three rostrata “Greater” redpolls are fairly obvious here (blue arrows), being larger and darker than the birds around them. And several others are possibly “Greater” but not quite dark enough or large enough to be identified confidently. Usually it is seen as the same (sub)species as the Greenland Redpoll (rostrata). They have a few things in common: namely their large size and dark appearance. They have a huge bill and are heavily streaked. The bird possessed some rather Arctic Redpoll-like structural characters, largely a function of feather density - a fat ‘pug-faced’, small-eyed look, bull-necked appearance, deep chest, broad ‘shoulders’, very long ‘tubular’, barrel-shaped body (like the rostrata), heavily ‘trousered’ tibia and long wings and tail. These birds are considered by some authors to be a ‘hybrid swarm’ between rostrata Common Redpoll and hornemanni Arctic Redpoll but the taxonomy of redpolls in Iceland is poorly understood and other interpretations incorporate dark islandica into rostrata, regarding pale Icelandic birds as a form of Arctic Redpoll (either hornemanni, exilipes or an ancestral native form).
